Security and audit trail3 steps

What the audit trail records

Every action on a document, with its time, email address and IP: what the audit trail captures, where to see it and why it matters.

Every document keeps an audit trail: a dated record of everything that happened to it. It's how you can show who signed, when, and from where.

What it records

Each entry has the date and time, the email address of the person who did it, and their IP address. The events are:

  • Document uploaded and Sent for signature
  • Opened by recipient, each time someone opens their link
  • Field completed, for each field filled in
  • Recipient signed or Recipient declined
  • Recipient details corrected, when you fix an email address
  • Reminder sent and Links renewed
  • Payments: Payment started, Payment received, Payment failed or abandoned, Payment refunded, and disputes
  • Completed by all parties, Cancelled by sender or Links expired

See a document's audit trail

  1. Open the document from Documents.
  2. Scroll to Audit trail. The newest event is at the top.
  3. On the Business plan, the same trail is printed on a certificate page at the end of the signed PDF. See The signed PDF and its certificate.

Good to know

  • Entries can't be edited, by you or anyone else.
  • Before they start, every signer ticks a box agreeing to sign electronically.
