About the Vehicle bill of sale template

A bill of sale is the receipt for a private vehicle sale. It proves who sold the vehicle to whom, when, and for how much, and it identifies the vehicle by its VIN so there is no doubt which one changed hands. Licensing offices in many places ask to see one when the buyer registers the vehicle, and it protects the seller if the vehicle is later involved in a fine or an accident after the handover.

This template records the odometer reading, everything handed over with the vehicle, and any defects the buyer was shown, and states that the vehicle is sold as seen. The seller confirms they own it outright, that nothing is owed on it, and that the mileage is accurate to their knowledge.

A bill of sale does not transfer the registration on its own. Both parties should still complete the licensing authority's transfer form, and the seller should tell the authority the vehicle has been sold. With Salsox, both sign on the spot and leave with the same copy.

Questions

Do I need a bill of sale to sell a car privately?

Many licensing authorities require or recommend one, and it is the best evidence of the sale for both sides. It does not replace the official transfer of registration, which you still need to complete.

What does sold as seen mean?

The buyer accepts the vehicle in its current condition, having had the chance to inspect it. It does not protect a seller who hid a defect or misdescribed the vehicle.

Should the seller keep a copy?

Yes. If a speeding ticket, toll or parking fine arrives for a date after the sale, the signed bill of sale with its date shows the vehicle was no longer theirs.
