About the Commercial invoice template for export shipments
A commercial invoice is the main document customs authorities use to decide what duty and tax are due on imported goods. It is issued by the exporter and travels with the shipment, and it has to describe the goods precisely enough for the importing country's customs to classify and value them.
This template carries the details customs typically need: exporter and importer with their customs registration numbers, each item's description, tariff (HS) code, country of origin, quantity and value, the packaging and weights, the Incoterms rule that says who pays for what, and a signed declaration that the information is true. Where goods qualify for preferential tariffs under a trade agreement, add the origin statement the agreement requires; the sample shows the wording used under the UK-EU agreement.
The importer countersigns to confirm the goods and values ordered, which is not a customs requirement but gives both sides one agreed record. Check the destination country's own requirements, as some ask for extra details or a specific format.

Questions
Is a commercial invoice the same as a sales invoice?
It carries the same sale, but adds what customs needs: tariff codes, origin, weights, Incoterms and a declaration. Many exporters issue both.
What is an HS code?
The Harmonized System tariff code that classifies a product for customs worldwide. The first six digits are international; countries add further digits of their own.
Can a commercial invoice be signed electronically?
Many customs authorities accept electronically signed commercial invoices, and some ask for none to be printed at all. Check your destination and carrier.
